Salvatore Accardo burst onto the music scene with his performance of Paganini’s Capricci at the age of 13 and he has remained a permanent figure in Italian and international music circles for over six decades. Composers such as Donatoni, Piston, Piazzolla and Xenakis have all written pieces for this violinist who is also active as a conductor. Spurred by a deep-seated dedication to chamber music, he founded his own string quartet, Quartetto Accardo, in 1992. For this concert they will perform one work each by Italian composer geniuses Boccherini, Verdi and Respighi. Boccherini, who came from a family of artists and musicians, penned nearly 100 string quartets (in the process exceeding Haydn’s output), and from this wide choice the audience in the Grand Hall has the opportunity of enjoying the Opus 33 in E minor. This is followed by Il Tramonto, one of the most dramatic pieces by Respighi renowned for his grandiose symphonic works, in which he sets to music Shelley’s poem The Sunset, a tale of the meeting and separation of lovers. Soprano Eszter Sümegi, holder of the Hungarian Meritorious Artist award, interprets the solo of the chamber work that lays bare the emotional power of operas. The concert winds up with Verdi’s unique E minor quartet for strings, about which the composer, who was not experienced in the purely instrumental genres, said: “I don't know whether the Quartet is beautiful or ugly, but I do know that it’s a Quartet!” The concert by Quartetto Accardo is not the only occasion when the audience of the Liszt Academy has the opportunity of meeting Salvatore Accardo; the renowned violinist has graciously accepted a seat on the jury of the Bartók World Competition and Festival being organized for the first time this year.
