THE WINNERS OF THE NATIONAL LEÓ WEINER CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION 2016

The competition jointly organised by the Weiner Foundation and the Department of Chamber Music of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music took place between 11 and 15 April.

Six duos for violin and piano, two string trios and four string quartets had the opportunity to match strength in every category and in two rounds. The competitors were young musicians graduated or in training at Hungarian secondary or higher education music institutions.

The head of jury of the 2016 competition was Imre Rohman, pianist and professor of University of Music and Dramatic Arts Mozarteum in Salzburg, but Márta Gulyás, Gábor Csalog, János Devich, Balázs Fülei, Péter Komlós, Péter Kováts and Péter Masopust also participated as jury panel members.

In the category violin-piano, the jury deemed Éva Osztrosits (violin) and Barnabás Kérges (piano) best, tutored by Márta Gulyás. Two string quartets came first and shared the award: the quartet of Ernő Kállai (violin), Géza Szajkó (violin), Kálmán Szilveszter Dráfi (viola) and István Balázs (cello) trained by János Devich and the string quartet of Sára Deák (violin), Tamás Szabó (violin), Gergő Fajd (viola), Barnabás Baranyai (cello) prepared jointly by János Devich and Péter Kováts. No string trio got awarded in this competition. The other awardees of the contest are listed here.

The first three prize winners in the categories are awarded a scholarship sum, but the awardees of the 1st prize will also have the chance to give concerts nationally as well as internationally.
