The primary objective of the Liszt Academy Chamber Music Department is to build on musicians’ previously acquired instrumental technique and develop further in them the skill of musical dialogue, thus turning out from the institution’s workshop chamber musicians of a world standard. At this concert spotlighting the work of the department we find both students and their masters amongst the performing artists. The programme spans epochs and genres, with keynote compositions representing every single area of chamber music. The imposing keyboard part of Johann Sebastian Bach’s 5th Brandenburg Concerto is performed by Gábor Csalog, while the flute part is played by Ildikó Szabady, special prize winner at the 2014 chamber music competition in Szeged. Béla Bartók’s 5th string quartet and a suite compiled from Igor Stravinsky’s work The Soldier’s Tale provide a flavour of 20th century chamber music, while the C minor piano quartet by Johannes Brahms is the evening’s representative of Romanticism. The former and current heads of department, Márta Gulyás and Balázs Fülei respectively, also take their place on the stage.
