“I always composed somewhat contrary to my previous works: what I wrote in a previous piece, I tried to go beyond or formulate in a different way in the next. It sometimes happens that I touch on the same issue twice, trying to resolve it in two different works - but I think this is what the great composers have also done in opuses containing six or twelve works... For me, there has been a slow change over the years that has brought me to a changed tonal world. I started to realize that harmony, melody, clear solutions of form are more important.” Thus spoke the doyen of Hungarian composition on an earlier anniversary birthday, whose 90th birthday is now celebrated, albeit forcibly delayed but even more worthily with this concert. The Contemporary Ensemble of the Liszt Academy, students of the university – coached by László Tihanyi and Péter Tornyai – perform in honour of József Soproni, thereby paying respects to him not only as a significant composer but also as one of the institution’s leading lecturers, professor emeritus and former president.
