The programme of this year’s kamara.hu opening concert is framed by exhilarating works revealing the two different faces of youth – just as Proust himself starts his novel with childhood. The concert begins with the 70-year-old Janáček’s wind sextet in which the composer hearkens back to his early youth. Or could he be experiencing his final years rich in successes and inspiration as a second childhood? Either way, this is a musical portrait of youth as painted by an elderly man. The concert finale is another four-movement sextet – from exactly a century earlier. In this case, the 15-year-old Mendelssohn attempts to break out of the prison of youth (and in this he succeeds), in order to develop from a child prodigy into an adult composer. As well as the music of the perennially youthful Mozart there is also room for Fauré, who is frequently mentioned in the novel. Indeed, After a Dream could well serve as the concert title because In Search of Lost Time begins with a gradual awakening from slumber. The dreamy, sometimes languid world of music is intensified by the cornerstone of Fauré’s melodic period, Elegy, reminiscent of meaningful conversation.
