Hindemith: Sonata for Double Bass and Piano

INTERMISSION

Gyula Fekete: Sonata for Double Bass and Piano (premiere)
Schubert: Sonata in A minor (‘Arpeggione’), D. 821

Zsolt Fejérvári (double bass), Dávid Báll (piano), Judit Rajk (vocals)

Polish composer and pianist Katarzyna Brochocka has expanded the double bass repertoire with numerous works and she has written a solo suite, sonata and concerto for the instrument. This instrument also has a leading part in her work Chamber Music (2009) composed for selected texts from the poem cycle by James Joyce: it provides commentary and counterpoint to the vocal part taken in this concert by Judit Rajk. In the programme that is not unlike a sonata recital, Zsolt Fejérvári and Dávid Báll show the multitude of possibilities inherent in the double bass-piano combination through such pieces as the arrangement of Schubert’s popular work, Gyula Fekete’s nostalgia-infused composition, Hindemith’s four-movement, neo-Classicist sonata and Sofia Gubaidulina’s lyrical-visionary, remarkable composition featuring improvizational-like playing methods.
