My friends are those who haunt the Ideal; there, dear friend, we 'recognize' each other, and shall always do so…

Liszt to Ödön Mihalovich

János Rolla & Liszt Academy Chamber Orchestra 2020

The chamber orchestra of the university’s students will perform jewels of music history under the guidance of Kossuth Prize-winning violinist János Rolla on three occasions as part of this season ticket. Similarly to students during rehearsals, the audience will witness the meeting of generations and the endurance of chamber orchestra traditions in Hungary. Embedded between Bartók's three-movement Divertimento for string orchestra and Schubert's Symphony No. 5, the program of the first concert will feature J.S.Bach's Piano Concerto in D minor in the rendition of internationally acclaimed French pianist David Fray, who has been a visiting professor at the Liszt Academy starting from this year. The public will  hear an oratorio composed by Haydn in the 1790s, which sets to music the last seven words of Christ at the second concert; the orchestra and the university’s Alma Mater Choir will be conducted by professors Gergely Ménesi and Csaba Somos. Audiences of the final concert in the series will be treated to two veritable Bach hits: the suite in H minor and the Brandenburg Concerto No. 5; Gustav Mahler’s re-write for string orchestra of Schubert's string quartet entitled Death and the Maiden, one of the most famous pieces in the history of chamber music, will be the closing act of the recital. The keyboard and flute solos of the Bach pieces will be performed by university professors Miklós Spányi, an expert of early music, and Veronika Oross.
