The Liszt Academy announces the programmes of the 2022-2023 season
New concert series, a cast of extraordinary performers and programmes await the audience in the next season of the Liszt Academy. The collaboration between the university and the Liszt Ferenc Chamber Orchestra will continue in the new season under the Master Play moniker.
The Baroque Sopranos series features three outstanding singers and their repertoire will include seldom performed arias. French soprano Chantal Santon Jeffrey will be performing her first solo concert in Budapest; Julia Lezhneva will return to the Liszt Academy accompanied by the Venice Baroque Orchestra and Anna Prohaska will take the stage with the world-famous Basel Chamber Orchestra.
The Orchestra in the Centre series includes concerts by Poland’s Sinfonietta Cracovia and cellist László Fenyő, by Kristóf Baráti and the Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna-Berlin Chamber Orchestra as well as the legendary pianist Rudolf Buchbinder.
The Organ Concerts series will feature performances by Martin Haselböck, James Sherlock, János Pálúr, László Deák and Mónika Kecskés.
The Vocal Music series includes concerts by the American Chanticleer Choir, winner of multiple Grammy Awards; the Wiener Sängerknaben, which boasts a history of more than five hundred years; as well as a joint performance of the Alma Mater Choir, which consists of the students of the Liszt Academy and Aura Musicale.
In addition to the Borodin Quartet, the String Quartets series includes concerts by the Brodsky Quartet, the Keller Quartet, the Quatuor Ébène and the Tetzlaff Quartet.
In the series named after the Liszt Academy Symphony Orchestra, which was awarded the title of National Youth Orchestra, the ensemble will perform under the baton of Péter Eötvös, Gilbert Varga, Kristóf Baráti and Gergely Ménesi, in addition to artistic director Gábor Takács-Nagy. The Liszt Academy String Orchestra, which is part of the Symphony Orchestra, will present its own independent series with the participation of Kristóf Baráti, Barnabás Kelemen and János Rolla.
The programme of the Chamber Music – Tuned for Grand Hall series will once again feature unique productions, mostly designed for the particular concerts included in the series. The list of performers includes Maxim Rysanov of Ukraine and Nikolay Lugansky of Russia, András Keller, Miklós Perényi and Mihály Berecz, Mischa Maisky and his children, as well as the soloists of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Dénes Várjon among others.
The following series will continue in the new season: Chamber Music, So Close in the Solti Hall; Black and White Colours, which showcases the versatility of the piano; as well as Here and Now, which pays homage to music composed in the 20th century and today.
The Liszt Academy joins the programmes celebrating the 100th birth anniversary of György Ligeti with a programme entitled Ligeti 100. The Liszt Birthday Festival will take place this season as well, where young pianist Gergely Kovács and two outstanding lecturers of the university - Gábor Farkas, head of the department, and János Balázs - will give a special concert accompanied by their students, Ildikó Rozsonits and Valentin Magyar.
The Generation Y series presents young artists in their thirties in various chamber ensembles, the Talent Obliges series features the youngest generation of musicians, while the Workshops at the Liszt Academy series showcases the work of the various departments of the university and the results of their projects.
The autumn programmes of the Liszt Kidz Academy series will introduce the youngest members of the audience to the world of so-called applied music in the framework of four concerts entitled ‘Music at your service!’ The spring chapter of the series, which begins in February, will be entitled Divine Music.
The programmes of the kamara.hu festival, organised by artistic directors Izabella Simon and Dénes Várjon in the autumn, will revolve around Virginia Woolf's book entitled A Room of One’s Own. The list of performers includes Radovan Vlatković, Veronika Eberle, and Barnabás Kelemen and writer Krisztina Tóth will be the guest of the literary discussion.
Fans of jazz music have several concerts to look forward to this season, including performances by the Tzumo Trio, Ágnes Lakatos, the Binder Trio, and the Reggie Jonas Jr. Trio. For those interested in folk music, the season holds a number of promising programmes: Ákos Gubinecz's album release concert entitled Infinite Male Voices, the Day of Folk Dance co-organized by the Liszt Academy and the Hungarian Heritage House, as well as the evening celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of the Department of Folk Music of the Liszt Academy.
The collaboration between the Liszt Academy and the Ferenc Liszt Chamber Orchestra, which commenced in the spring of 2021 under the title Master Play, will continue in the new season. In the 2021-2022 season, the ensemble invited 25 students to play together with world-famous musicians at nine concerts and to perform at the concerts of the ensemble’s tours in Spain in May and in Germany in July. The long-term collaboration is designed to support classical music education, help students mature into orchestral artists, and imparts practical knowledge to future generations of artists.
Ticket sales for the concert season will start after August 20. The Liszt Academy will not be selling season tickets, instead it offers even more discounts when tickets are purchased for multiple concerts within the same series. For two concerts, the discount is 10 percent, for three or more concerts it is 15 percent, while those registered for the Liszt Academy Extra service, will receive an additional 5 percent in discounts.
