The most important class, however, for me and for hundreds of other Hungarian musicians, was the chamber-music class. From about the age of fourteen, and until graduation from the Academy, all instrumentalists except the heavy-brass players and percussionists had to participate in this course. Presiding over it for many years was the composer Leó Weiner, who thus exercised an enormous influence on three generations of Hungarian musicians.

THREE LISZT ACADEMY LECTURERS ON THIS YEAR’S KULT50 LIST

28 September 2020

The Fidelio editorial board, aided by a number of renowned patrons, have compiled this year’s list of artists who made an outstanding contribution to their field last year. The list includes three lecturers at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music.

Covering fifty artists in ten categories, the list’s classical music section now features conductor Péter Erdei, founding director of the Academy’s Kodály Institute and current lecturer there, in recognition of his promotion of choral singing and the Kodály method. Also included is harpist Anasztázia Razvaljajeva, lecturer at the Academy, for her concert Winterreise – Through a Woman’s Eyes and for her unconventional working methods. Clarinetist–saxophonist Mihály Borbély, lecturer at the Academy, received his spot on the list in the jazz, folk and world music category for his album Grenadilla and for his multi-genre output.

The classical music category had as its patron early music specialist and conductor György Vashegyi, President of the Hungarian Academy of Arts, while recitalist Áron Eredics lent his expert advice within the jazz, folk and world music section.

Launched as a mission by Fidelio in 2017, KULT50 delayed its announcement, originally scheduled for April, until this autumn because of the pandemic. The organisers note that ‘in such extraordinary times, when our cultural actors are engaged in an intense struggle for the arts, audiences and shared catharsis, it is imperative to support them in every possible way. After all, this is our common cause’.
