The most important class, however, for me and for hundreds of other Hungarian musicians, was the chamber-music class. From about the age of fourteen, and until graduation from the Academy, all instrumentalists except the heavy-brass players and percussionists had to participate in this course. Presiding over it for many years was the composer Leó Weiner, who thus exercised an enormous influence on three generations of Hungarian musicians.

4th Éva Marton International Singing Competition / Gala Concert Presented by Liszt Academy

Conductor: Balázs Kocsár

The competition is over, the decisions of jury and audience are in, and we now know who is the winner of first prize at this year’s International Éva Marton Singing Competition out of the more than 250 applicants, who submitted their recordings to the preliminary runoffs back in spring 2020. The record number of entries is an indication of the standing of the competition: young singers are increasingly attracted not only by the €70,000 total prize money on offer but also the opportunity to showcase their talent to the world’s greatest opera singers, professors and impresarios, thereby potentially boosting their career into the stratosphere. During the gala of the IV International Éva Marton Singing Competition, the most gifted of all the young singers we met and got to like in the preceding days once again take to the stage of the Grand Hall, Liszt Academy. The same institution from where the careers of so many other great artists started will become a significant venue in the career pathways of several opera singers. Thus audience expectations are joined with the exuberant celebrations: the question is, when and where will we next come across the winners of the 2021 Éva Marton Singing Competition?

Live stream during the event can be followed on Liszt Academy's website, on our YouTube channel, on our Facebook page and on Papageno's Facebook page.
