Fairy tales and stories are related in the language of instrumental and vocal chamber music at this the third evening of the kamara.hu festival. The programme includes two Schumann works, Fairy Tales for clarinet, viola and piano, plus the song cycle on the fate of women; the C minor piano quartet by Brahms, which was a secret love note to Clara Schumann; and contemporary German composer Jörg Widmann’s staggeringly beautiful and profound five-movement cycle, which incidentally uses the same three instruments as in the Schumann composition. The clarinet parts in these two pieces are played by Jörg Widmann himself. Widmann is among the most in-demand artists of our day, not only as a composer but also as a clarinettist (he is both professor of the instrument and of composition at the Freiburg conservatory). The viola part is taken by Tabea Zimmermann, who studied under Sándor Végh in Salzburg and for whom György Ligeti specifically wrote his Viola Sonata. Zimmerman is currently professor at the Hans Eissler School of Music in Berlin and is a dedicated chamber musician, being a regular partner of Gidon Kremer, Heinz Holliger and Steven Isserlis, among others. Other performing artists need no introduction since we have already had a chance to meet them in earlier concerts in the festival series.
