The expression ‘sprezzatura’ – the performance artist ideal of the Renaissance signifying lightness and studied carelessness – sprang to the mind of the critic of The Times when considering a recording by Katia and Marielle Labèque. “Whether Mozart or Stravinsky, their musical line always sounds as if it’s being woven for the very first time... But the illusion of improvisation is the genius of their performances,” he wrote. According to another critic, the fundamental sensation of the play of the pianists enjoying a huge success at the Liszt Academy two years ago is that “extraordinary, tight and in every respect solid togetherness, integrity and unshakeable security that makes the playing of the two artists, the two sisters, completely bomb-proof.” The siblings have tried out virtually every genre that exists: they have worked together with the major European and American symphony orchestras and Baroque ensembles, not to mention leading contemporary composers including Pierre Boulez, György Ligeti, Thomas Adès, Louis Andriessen and Olivier Messiaen.
